We’re happy to announce that Let’s Encrypt has entered Public Beta. Invitations are no longer needed in order to get free certificates from Let’s Encrypt.

It’s time for the Web to take a big step forward in terms of security and privacy. We want to see HTTPS become the default. Let’s Encrypt was built to enable that by making it as easy as possible to get and manage certificates.

We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Limited Beta. Let’s Encrypt issued over 26,000 certificates during the Limited Beta period. This allowed us to gain valuable insight into how our systems perform, and to be confident about moving to Public Beta.

We’d also like to thank all of our sponsors for their support. We’re happy to have announced earlier today that Facebook is our newest Gold sponsor.

We have more work to do before we’re comfortable dropping the beta label entirely, particularly on the client experience. Automation is a cornerstone of our strategy, and we need to make sure that the client works smoothly and reliably on a wide range of platforms. Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit. Let’s Encrypt is a service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).

The key principles behind Let’s Encrypt are:

•Free: Anyone who owns a domain name can use Let’s Encrypt to obtain a trusted certificate at zero cost.
•Automatic: Software running on a web server can interact with Let’s Encrypt to painlessly obtain a certificate, securely configure it for use, and automatically take care of renewal.
•Secure: Let’s Encrypt will serve as a platform for advancing TLS security best practices, both on the CA side and by helping site operators properly secure their servers.
•Transparent: All certificates issued or revoked will be publicly recorded and available for anyone to inspect.
•Open: The automatic issuance and renewal protocol will be published as an open standard that others can adopt.
•Cooperative: Much like the underlying Internet protocols themselves, Let’s Encrypt is a joint effort to benefit the community, beyond the control of any one organization.

How to use this? Step by step tut...

Here is step by step for apache using virtual hosts on server. Everythink below was done under root user so you might need to use sudo before each if you are not switched to root. As I red guide there is also some non root mode but I haven't try that one.

1. You need to download their client from git using below commands:
cd letsencrypt

2. Next command without parameter will update your system env variables and create paths in /etc

3. Now you need to create standalone certificates for your server. I had changed my domain to Below will create 1 certificate for, and So you don't have to request 3 separated certificates but you will have all 3 in one bundle.
./letsencrypt-auto certonly -d -d -d
If you are using the command first time, you will be asked for your email to register the certificates with. 
After you will be asked what web server should be used for certificate validation. If you are using apache, choose apache from the list.

After command execution is done, all certificates are created and in place and can be found in path /etc/letsencrypt/live/

4. Now go to your apache virtual hosts directory and edit website virtual host file. Use vim or nano editor, depends on which one you like.
cd /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/

5. Change <VirtualHost *:80> to <VirtualHost *:443> in the beginning of the file (google how to redirect from http to https so you don't need always put https:// before your site manually)
6. Insert below code right above </VirtualHost> line and save the file
SSLEngine On
SSLProtocol All -SSLv2 -SSLv3
SSLCertificateFile /etc/letsencrypt/live/
SSLCertificateKeyFile /etc/letsencrypt/live/
SSLCACertificateFile /etc/letsencrypt/live/

7. Restart your apache server (below is ubuntu command)
service apache2 restart

Now your web site is using SSL connection and you can test it with putting to your browser.
And that's it.
